The eighth edition of the Resistance Film Festival was held from October 27 to 30, 2000 under the direction of “Abdolhassan Barzideh.” Before becoming the director of this edition of the event, Barzideh had a background in acting and writing several films, but this was his first experience at the Resistance Film Festival, meaning that he had not been a member of the festival team before, either as a director or as a member of the selection and judging panel.

In this edition of the festival, a forgotten section returned and a dead section was reborn; the section (so-called “gentlemen’s own”) of promotional items, which included photos, posters, and teasers and had been part of the festival in recent years but had been removed in the seventh edition, the previous edition, returned to the festival sections.

Also, the International Films section, which had only been included in the festival once in the fifth edition in 1994 and then lost its life and was not considered by the festival officials for some unknown reason, was reborn in the eighth edition and became one of the festival sections. But even this year, it was present at the festival as a guest and on the sidelines and was not judged and judged with Iranian films, which in itself is worthy of criticism.

The International Films section featured 11 feature films, including such notable works as Steven Spielberg’s “Saving Private Ryan,” Oliver Stone’s “Platoon,” and Stanley Kubrick’s “Full Metal Jacket,” all three of which are famous American filmmakers.

In the eighth season of the film festival, a section was added that was of great importance; under the title “Cinema Criticism and Essays Competition Section” whose members of the selection board and judges were announced in the previous section. In this section, as its name suggests, film criticism and scientific articles on this subject were examined and judged. The importance of this section stems from the fact that it shows that the knowledge-based part of cinema and theoretical sciences are slowly being taken into account.

Without a doubt, cinema, like any other field and field, cannot hope for its future until precise scientific definitions are created and it reaches a deep level of theory and thought, because it is like a building without a foundation. In any case, adding this section is a sign of the beginning of taking steps to pay attention to this important matter.

* From Iranian cinema, 11 feature films were also present at the festival, but no significant or lasting effects were seen among them; there were also 22 short films and 26 video and television programs.
